It’s hard to believe it has been two weeks since we returned from this trip. Max was my eager photographer and was excited to co-write about our experience. He has helped with the entries that follow, but getting them to the finish line and ready for posting has been a heavy lift for me. We returned on election day and since then my head and heart have been heavy, but it seems like it is time, and looking back and remembering the fun we had feels good. So, here goes…
When we planned this trip I didn’t really pay attention to the calendar - well, I paid attention to the school calendar and then the election schedule, but later realized we were headed to Texas for Día De Los Meurtos. We were lucky to get to experience it in a place that fully celebrates.
We started with a walk down to the famous bakery La Panaderia. The line was long but we didn’t have a big agenda for the day, being together was most of the point, so we waited. We tried their conchas and croissants in addition to their savory brunch offerings. My favorite was the black bean soup, but everything was tasty and fueled us well for the day.
From there we headed to check out the Alamo. Max asked what movies were playing….good thing we were headed there for some education. We didn’t tour inside but enjoyed the garden and the movie.
From there we made our way back toward the Riverwalk for the boat tour. This was a highlight of the day for all of us.
We had a great guide and perfect weather.
The Cypress trees were beautiful
We saw a crowd gathered here later in the day to watch a performance on the stage on the other side of the river. Apparently this is a regular occurance.
I found the faces on this building a little spooky
We finished up the river tour and I took Mom and Max back to the hotel for a bit of recharge time, and I headed out to explore on my own.
I wandered by the Antorcha de Amistad (Torch of Friendship)
Noted architectural styles
And churches
Saw a wedding…
Or two…
And enjoyed the artwork
It was all over the place
I headed back to rally the troops and we decided it was time for a swim before dinner
WE picked one of the many tex-mex spots on the river for dinner
And had front row seats for the riverboat parade!
It was a good and full day. I was worried it would be too hot, but the temperature was great with a nice breeze. Pretty ideal day 1! We had big plans for day 2….
It was fun
This is so great!! We had such a great time together!!
